Carnival of Venice....?

I found some pictures from the Carnival of Venice and became very interested in it and hope to go within the next few years. I was wondering what exactly you do there and how it works.

I've been to Carnevale the last ten years. There are costumed events, but there are also other entertainment going on around the city. The first Sunday, there's the Flight of the Angel which has a minor celebrity dressed as an angel "flying" from the top of the tower to the Piazza. This year there were some pretty good Commedia dell'arte performances. There was also an aerialist suspended from a balloon perofrming above the Piazza. There were different performances and activities in other places. The velociraptors and giraffes walking through the crowd the 1st and 2nd weeks respectivly were pretty good too.

There are other Carnevale celebrations here worth seeing too. http://www.carnevalediivrea.it/english/battaglia.asp , http://www.carnevalecento.com/index.asp , http://www.viareggio.ilcarnevale.com/

Well, you better be incredibly wealthy, as hotel rooms can go for a small fortune, and ball tickets can cost thousands. However, its really a lot like Mardi Gras, only with more elaborate costumes, and less drunken debauchery.
