If you are travelling from the UK and don't mind putting together your own holiday, why not try flying with Ryanair to Rome (Flights can be booked for as little as £35 return with all taxes), using websites such as http://www.booking.com and http://www.travelsupermarket.com for good value accommodation and then taking the efficient and cheap train from Rome to Naples (see http://www.italiarail.co.uk for times and prices).
From Naples, you can access Sorrento and the coastline on the narrow gauge railway (Info at http://www.vesuviana.it/ ).
Using these resources, you could plan a trip to remember. |

Italy is not particularly inexpensive - especially if you're coming om the US with the exchange rates these days Decent airfares can be found through sites like Yahoo's farechase http://farechase.yahoo.com/, skyscanner http://www.skyscanner.net/eur/?redirectu... or many others.
There are a lot of budget airlines operating in Europe that sometimes are cheaper than the trains. A good source for identifying flights between a given pair of cities is:
http://www.whichbudget.com/en/. There are links to the airline websites that will allow you to check specific schedules and prices and book tickets. This can be worth considering for longer trips within Italy or the airfare to Italy. Consider alternative airports to find the cheapest fares.
Generally, the best way to get around within Italy is using the train system. You can check specific schedules and prices at: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html. Generally, you don't need to prebook tickets long in advance except during the period around Easter. You can get the discount Amica fare on the trains when and where it is available. Night trains can save you the cost of a hotel for a night if you're traveling a long enough distance (e.g., Venice to rome or Naples). You can sleep in a berth through the night and arrive early the next day.
I use the venere.com site for booking hotels here in Italy. They have a large database. You can use a map to sort for a particular district in the city you're interested in and then sort by price, guest rating,... http://en.venere.com/italy/. The site has a lot of reviews by previous guests to get an idea of what to expect from the area, the hotel, and the staff. I've found a hotel within two minutes of Piazza San Marco during Carnevale on two days notice using the site.
You might also be interested in a accomodations at a convent or monastery in Italy. These tend to be some of the best lodging bargains available. There are a number of them in Rome, but they are also available in othe places. In some places in Italy, a monestary stay may be free. see: http://www.monasterystays.com/?show=page... or http://www.santasusanna.org/comingtorome... for information.
My brother and his wife stayed in one and recommended it. A nephew and his wife also stayed in a convent in Rome and agreed it was a good experience. There are a number of places near Amalfi. |

Tuscany is known for its landscapes and its artistic legacy. With these two attributes, I believe it can give you excellent inspiration for your novel. In addition, six Tuscan localities have been made UNESCO protected sites: the historical center of Florence (1982), the historical center of Siena (1995), the square of the Cathedral of Pisa (1987), the historical center of San Gimignano (1990), the historical center of Pienza (1996) and the Val d'Orcia (2004). I believe these beautiful UNESCO protected sites will bring lifr to your novel.
Positano is considered one of the most chic destinations in Europe. Two of its hotels, Il San Pietro and Le Sirenuse, are frequently cited as among the best in the world. This place has been featured in several films, including Only You (1994), and Under the Tuscan Sun (2003).
For other additional travel information, how you can save, see if this website can help you.
