Cheap and Venice don't really go together, but you can find some relatively inexpensive places if all you want is a bed for a night that's actually in Venice. The shuttle bus for Treviso leaves from Piazzale Roma and there are a number of options in that area.
I use the venere.com site for booking hotels here in Italy. They have a large database. You can use a map to sort for a particular district in the city you're interested in and then sort by price, guest rating,... http://en.venere.com/italy/. The site has a lot of reviews by previous guests to get an idea of what to expect from the area, the hotel, and the staff.
The lowest price, but also one of the lower ratings is the Airone Hotel http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/santa_croce_ovest/hotel_airone.html.
The Hotel Locanda Salieri may be a better value: http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/santa_croce_ovest/hotel_locanda_salieri.html
You can also click on the Santa Croce Ovest section on the map, sort by price, and see other options in the general area. I haven't stayed in any of these myself, so I can't make a specific recommendation. I usually stay in the area around Piazza San Marco during Carnevale and Il Redentore - that wouldn't be as convenient for getting to the bus for the early flight and would be somewhat more expensive.
One place I have stayed and can highly recommend is Hotel Abbazia close to the train station. This would be a 10 minute walk or less to Piazzale Roma for the bus in the morning and only a little more expensive that the others mentioned above. . http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/cannaregio_ovest/hotel_abbazia.html
One thing to keep in mind is that if you're here during Carnevale which starts at the end of January, there will be limited availability of rooms and prices will be somewhat higher. In that case, you might also want to consider Mestre just across the causeway from the island. the bus to the Treviso airport stops next to the Mestre station on the way. |

You could always check out the hostels there.. lots of choices, and you can still get a private room and bathroom at alot of them. Just type in hostels + Venice Italy for a search. I did that and I was great! Sometimes you have to pay cash though... |

I agree, Venice isn't the cheapest city but you can still find some good deals. The last few times I've stayed in apartments and found they they are better vaue for money than hotels. I stayed here the last time http://www.holiday-velvet.com/venice/venice_apartments/details/guggenheim+/id/164 but there are many to choose from. Otherwise, try something around the Santa Lucia train station as this is where the cheaper accommodation is. |

I think your best choice is to search
www.venere.com
for cheap hotels. Also with Venere you DON'T pay right away but at the end of your stay at the hotel. And that is very good. |

Not cheap but inexpensive:
http://www.fondazionelevi.org/foresteria... - this place is very close to the Accademia Gallery and to the water bus stops (on the other side of the Accademia - with 2 c's) bridge. Unfortunately the site isn't in English. If you ask for info in English they'll respond in English.
http://www.ciliota.it/chisiamo_ing.htm - this place is also close to the Accademia and just a 10 minute walk to Saint Mark's square. It's run by the local church. The rooms are comfy.... and there is a nice court year. Only pblm here is that there is a curfew. |
