I will be honest with you last year I did the same thing going from Firenze to Athens. I found that the best thing for me to do was to fly. I tried looking for my little online with several difference companies, orbitz and sidestep helped the most. I need up booking with orbitz because the they had a better deal with a room and fight. Also if you are going into Athens from the airport you should stop by the info center before exiting because they will give you some free maps of the city and metro lines. Make sure that you take the metro into the city and not a taxi. The taxi will cost you an arm and a leg while the metro is extremely reasonable. I had a great time when i was there I was there for a week. I think i paid about $500 for my ticket. Good luck!!!

I've have flown from Italy to athens and I would tell you to try Easyjet or Ryanair. www.easyjet.com or ryanair.com you can get there sites in english just an FYI but they are usually really cheap. In the past the tax has always been more then the tickets because you can get tickets as cheap as .1 euro cent. The problem is I cant flights from Florence to Athens so maybe you could fly out of a different airport like rome. Looks like easy jet will fly from Milan to Athens but Milan is about 6 hours from Florence depending on how you drive. Easyjet and Ryanair are two EU airlines they are nice I've never had a problem on either one and they are cheaper then the southwest or ata the states version.
