Cheapest way to get from Rome to Milan?

train or plane?

I need to get from Rome to Milan, going around 15th December and returning around 23rd? Does anyone know any Italian train websites (pref budget) or where I can find an amazingly cheap flight
thanks

I agree with Claudio about the high cost of trains on line Roma-Milano, unless you travel during the night (when you can find one or two cheap trains with or without sleeping car). Anyway you can check all timetables and prices here http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/cms/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=3fdbe14114bc9110VgnVCM10000080a3e90aRCRD
Be sure to reserve (train or flight doesn't matter) with a VERY large advance, because around Christmas people travel very much.

It would be good if you could book JUST NOW

Pinguino
By train you can get from city center to city center in 4h and 30 minutes and it will cost you near 56 Euro (second class).
By December the Milan - Bologna route should be ready for high-speed, though.

Edit: although is true Eurostar or Alta Velocità may not appear that cheap (but they don't appear that cheap to Italians only; the real problem in Italy are trains used by commuters, which are too often dirty, cold and on delay), remember you start frorm the center of Rome and you stop in the center of Milan; while by flight you have to add the cost of the bus or (even worst) a taxi to and from the airport. and a second class on Alta Velocità (56 Euro) is a more comfortable trip than on a flight with RyanAir (40 Euro, the flight alone)

TRAIN
Pinguino' answer is correct BUT
it happens that if you book EARLY on trenitialia.it you might also have access to a special fare class called TARIFFA AMICA (= friendly fare) that is discounted BUT NOT refundable. Just select it when asked to choose fare type instead of standard. I know it is available on the Eurostar and Alta Velocità (=high speed) trains which I recommend because slower train result a pain in the *** and are often subject to heavy delays.

FLIGHT
As far as I know there's no such thing as a discount website for internal flights. They all sell the "cheapest" available flight equal to the company website, but some (i.e. eDreams or Volagratis ) may add a small commission.
Anyway for the time you get to the airport pass the security checks etc. it is time consuming as much as the train, therefore catch the train. If instead you are a plane lover and do want to fly to Milanoremember that:
Linate (LIN) is the closest airport to Milan center, Orio al Serio (BGY) is the Bergamo airport and Malpensa (MXP) is in the Varese provence.
Hence the cost and speed of connections.

depends on how early you book. The train is bet as you see more of the country!

No doubt: PLANE!
From Rome to Milan Trenitalia has been suppressing most cheap trains, they have left just frightfully expensive Eurostar, and they are introducing the even more expensive Alta Velocità. A real theft.
By plane you can save a lot of money (and time) if you reserve a low cost flight. The simplest way is Ryanair, which offers cheap flights from Roma Ciampino to Milano Orio al Serio. You have still time, if you reseve early you can buy both flights for 39,92 euros! By train for 39,92 euros you could hardly reach Florence... but hurry up, these special offers last just a little.
