Check out the Hotel Abbazia. I loved this hotel. It really is off the beaten path - down an alley about 2 blocks from the Termini. But I have to tell you this hotel is just lovely. Because it's not on the main canal it's a little bit less expensive. Call them, it's cheaper if you speak to them than if you book online.
The hotel itself is an old Abbey, so there are no elevators, but it was a short set of steps to our second floor room. And there is a bellman that will carry all your bags up. The room itself was pretty small, but was perfectly appointed. It had a double bed, 2 tall wall cabinets, a desk and a flat screen TV. It was also the only hotel we went to during our trip to Italy with free internet. The bed and walls were covered in a red damask. The best part of the hotel room was the bathroom. After a long flight from NYC via Rome that bathtub was one of the best thing that I had seen in more than 12 hours. The bathroom is nearly as big as the hotel room itself. I don't know what they do, but when you put the water in the tub it apprears to be blue. They have candles and incense in there it was just so relaxing. Again, you aren't overlooking the main canal, but there is a nice garden in the courtyard.
And the breakfast is phenominal. Made sure you eat some of those croissants filled with chocolate. |

Try the Hotel Ca'Doro. Venice, on the canals. Telephone number 041 2411212 Fax 041 2414385. My wife and son stayed there last year and enjoyed their visit. |

Try http://www.booking.com/ but nothing is cheap in Venice... And yes... it is a "particular" city... very original... but I don't think it's so romantic...
Why don't Florence??

Check out my favourites here http://www.my-italy-piedmont-marche-and-more.com/luxury-hotels-venice.html
Not all are cheap but you can often find good deals out of season. Try Kayak for some really good prices. |

Well after being in much of Europe and Venice I would not go back, I was there for about 8 hours and I saw everything there was to see in that time. And for a cheap hotel, no way, nothing in Venice is cheap, except for a scarf or neck tie, thats it. For a beer in the main courtyard they wanted 17 euros, that is something like $22.50. Little bit steep by me. I would for sure recomend another destination, something like Rome, which has much more to offer and is probally a litlle bit cheaper, Sorriento or just about everything in southern Italy is dirt cheap, almost cheaper than the states.
Well hope this helped a little.

Have a look at the reviews here:
http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/hotels/list.asp?r=Venice
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g187870-Venice_Veneto-Hotels.html
And then give a telephone call to the hotel, they are often more kind by phone then internet :-) |

i liked Hotel San Cassiano - * * *
Located on the Grand Canal in the very heart of Venice,5 minutes walking from Rialto bridge and at 15 from San Marco Square, the San Cassiano is the first Hotel in Venice which has been named Residenza d'Epoca from a special government commission of Fine Arts;

Don't you like your sister?
Venice is pretty but it smells funny. Food is VERY expensive.
It's over rated. |
