Venice is a good place to visit around Christmas. It's not so crowded and there are concerts most nights. There should be a good, free concert at the Frari in San Polo in the afternoon on the 26th.

The 26th or December is a holiday in Venice a lot of businesses will be closed. Museums like the the Guggenheim, Accademia, etc are open. They close for the 25th, but not the 26th. Most of the churches have nativity scenes that are worth seeing. There's a deconsecrated church between Rialto and the train station that has an exhibit with several nativity scenes every year. The hotel restaurants and some of the others will be opened, but a lot of the restaurants close for several weeks starting from Christmas.

Venere.com is a good site for booking hotels in Italy. http://en.venere.com/hotels_venice/ You can sort by price, location in the city, guest rating, and other criteria. There are also reviews by past guests that can help you know what to expect.

Enjoy Venice)

Take your ice skates. The canals freeze over and it's a lot of fun. The sleigh rides are better than the gondolas.

I love Venice during the winter. It is at it's most beautiful and evocative during winter. The city is also not overrun with tourists during the winter. The heat and humidity of summer - plus the smells can really be unpleasant. You will need to dress warmly though. I can think of few better places to spend Christmas though.

There are a lot of hotels in Venice. I have a few favorites but it does depend a lot on your own personal tastes.

Unfortunately most places - museums and shops close over Christmas.
