Cool places to hang out in Rome off the beaten path? |
Hi, anyone know of places to relax and have an inexpensive meal and cafe in Rome that are in more residential neighborhoods instead of in touristy areas? Anyone have any favorite charming cafes they can recommend? Thanks, Rupak |

The San Giovanni in Laterano area is quite residential but still not too far from Rome Center. Your best bet would be to try the area outside the city walls (you can take the Metro A line and get out at S.Elena) - here you certainly won't pay central Rome prices, the area is residential but you will have plenty of options.
There is also a fantastic market in Via Sannio, the road running along the old city wall, and you can pick up some great deals on clothes, shoes etc.
This page on San Giovanni http://www.romanlife-romeitaly.com/san-giovanni.html will give you a better idea of the area.
Also you can head out to the lake at EUR. Take Metro line B and hop off at EUR Palasport or EUR Fermi (about 20 minutes from Termini). The lake is beautiful and very relaxing with large green areas surrounding it.
The area is very residential, but there are plenty of cafès and ice cream shops.
If you feel like a stroll head on over to the other side of the lake (in an anti-clockwise direction) and you will find one of the best ice cream bars in Rome! (it's the only one on the far side of the lake on the RHS when you exit the Metro) Do yourself a favour and order "La Forest Nera" if you enjoy chocolate and cherries...highly recommended.
Otherwise I hesitate to recommend restaurants because staying in Rome I have very very rarely had a bad meal out! Find something that appeals to you in the moment and enjoy. |

Check Rick Steves website. If you can you should buy one of his books. there is one about Rome (Roma) in which he gives excellent tips for visitors to see some of the more interesting places that are not frequented by tourists.
Be careful where you go and use a bag under your pants for valuables.

If you really want off the beaten track, I will treat you to a little gem. It's my local "Osteria", Osteria Sirena, in Via del Vignola, in the Flaminio district. I can't remember what number it is, but it's around half way down, near the newstand.
It's near the auditorium, you can get a tram to Piazza Mancini from just outside Piazza del Popolo, or use the atac website to find a convenient bus. - http://www.atac.roma.it/
It's like entering a time warp, the decor is 60's and 70's, and there are photos of Mussolini everywhere. The food is authentic Roman and dead cheap. There is a sort of menu, but there will also be a list on a piece of paper in pencil, or you will get told what is good today by the Senora with her big pebble glasses. I think her name is Francesca, but it's written on her pinny, just take a look! You won't get a wine list, just asked red or white, and a litre bottle will be plonked on your table.
I hope not everyone reads this, it's my secret!
Enjoy |
