Lago Garda is pretty nice; it's about an hour north of where I live. There are lots of good restaurants and scenery. Around the lake, there are several castles and some decent Roman ruins. Verona is close and has a good old town and nice shopping opportunities. The best beaches are on the north end of the lake in the mountains.
However, it sounds like you might be looking for something more like Rimini where there's some nightlife or Sardinia also has great beaches. |

I like Sorrento but prefer Naples. The beaches south of Sorrento however are a lot cleaner. Are you interested in meeting/partying with locals? If so Naples is a lot more fun!! I myself am going to spend time with friends for 3 months. Thats how much I like it!! |

Have a look at Puglia, beautiful scenery, beautiful beaches and food.
Just Google, Puglia and have a look at the fantastic images. Its a beautiful region and still quite undiscovered by tourists, but there is still so much to do. |

I stayed in Sant Angello, right next to Sorrento. I highly recommend them both, scenery you won't believe and lots of great shops and restaurants. |
