Good answers so far.
You MUST go to:
Galleria dell'Accademia - where the statue of David is
Santa Croce Church - Michelangelo is buried there, nice church
il Duomo - in the very center of city, beautiful church, go to the top of the bell tower as well
San Lorenzo Church - another beautiful church you must see
San Lorenzo Market - right outside of the church lined up on all the streets, amazing, so much good stuff (just make sure you dont buy anything from the Africans with stuff on the blankets and posterboard, they mostly sell sunglasses, belts, purses, etc. It is ILLEGAL to buy from them and could cost you 2000Euro if you are caught!)
Galleria degli Uffizi - amazing museum you must see
Ponte Vecchio - the oldest bridge (during WWII the germans wouldnt bomb it because they knew how important this bring was) many gold shops along side of it, and live music at night
Bargello - another really nice museum
Piazza della Repubblica
Piazza della Signoria
Palazzo Strozzi
Medici Palace
*All of these are about 5-10 mins walking distance from each other
Across the bridge:
Santo Spirito - beautiful church, with michelangelo's only wooden sculptured cross (or so it is believed to be)
Giardini Boboli - Boboli Gardens
Palazzo Pitti
It'll be really hard to see all this, so choose from what interests you the most. If you cross the river, it'll be less touristy, but it's really nice in the old part of the city. Have an awesome trip! Watch out for the gypsies too, they pickpocket, so watch your wallet and bags |

There are several pages of pics here.
You should see the Church of Santa Croce.
Statue of David.
You'll see the Ponte Vecchio very easily.
If you have time you could go up the hill, (street car), to Fiesole. It is a great view of the whole city.
There are wonderful Trattorias for great food. You need to ask someone, maybe a concierge at a hotel for recommendations. Ask them where they eat.
Far more than you can cover in one day.
Have a great time. |

Whew, one day. I would go to the Uffizi Gallery, but I'm an art buff. |

The romantic Viale dei Colli up to Piazzale Michelangelo and stop to admire the wonderful panorama of the city. The Duomo complex: Giotto's bell tower, the Baptistery with its bronze doors including the Porta del Paradiso and the interior of the Cathedral with the magnificent Cupola del Brunelleschi. The renowned Galleria dell Accademia where you can admire David by Michelangelo and other works by the artist.
Continue to the old city center to visit the Franciscan Church of Santa Croce (exterior). A short walk through the historic of Florence brings you to the Piazza Signoria, where you can admire the Palazzo Vecchio (exterior) and the beautiful Loggia del Lanzi. Continue to the Galleria degli Uffizi where you can admire the superb paintings of Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello and Giotto. This is a full day in Firenze enjoy. |
