Day Train Trip from Rome: Orvieto or Assisi?

Planning on taking a day trip by train from Rome in November of 2009 but can't decide between Orvieto or Assisi. I know I could go both in one day, but don't want to be rushed.

I'm assuming each village is easily reachable by train. I've never taken a train in Italy before so I am not sure.

Both are lovely and to go to either depends on your preference really. There's more to do and to see in Orvieto, and its site over the volcanic tuff is just very impressive. Assisi is smaller so it's easier to navigate.

You can get to both places by train to the foot of the hills, and proceed with other means of transport.

With Orvieto there are direct trains from Rome to Orvieto Scalo (journey time 60-80 minutes, depending on train type), and from there you can either take a bus, or a taxi, or the funicular (read: spectacular view!) to the city up on the hill.

As for Assisi, there are trains from Rome to Assisi direct, or Rome to Foligno where you will then take a local connection to Assisi/Santa Maria degli Angeli (journey time 2-3 hours, depending on connection and train type). From there bus line C will take you all the way the hill.

It's too early right now to check for train availability etc but come closer the time (up to 2-3 months in advance of your travel) check the Trenitalia website for train schedules and ticket prices.

It takes 1h15 to go to Orvieto by train and 2h30 to go to Assisi unless you want to spend the whole day travelling I would suggest to pick just one destination...they are both beautiful cities. I personally like Orvieto better (perfect for Christmas shopping with all those little handcrafts stores) but it's personal....take a look at this website www.umbriatravel.com (below are the links to how to reach both Assisi and Orvieto) you'll find some useful informations that can help you decide! Have fun!

Assisi is better

It isn't impossible to visit both, but it really doesn't make sense at all to rush around missing the opportunity of hanging around a little more in a place you may really fall in love with. You'd be always staring at your watch checking to see how many minutes you can dedicate to one thing.

Visiting takes time. Doing both in one day is just to tell friends you saw two places instead of one.
I'd suggest you to see Orvieto, as it's a town I know quite well and I'm sure you'd find it really interesting.

Allow yourself to spend some quality time in just one place and try to enjoy the athmosphere, the food and the views. Stop inside the amazing Cathedral, make a tour of the Underground Orvieto to visit the Etruscan Necropolis, visit the Museum, the archaeological itinerary inside the caves of Pozzo della Cava, enjoy a glass of Orvieto Classico white wine in one of the charming restaurants of the historical center.

If you like castles, go to Assisi.
If you like wine, go to Orvieto.
