Do I need to show euros to go to Italy for a week?

My sister called the Italian embassy and they told her that we need to show $120.00 euros for each day and each person. The problem is that we didn't want to have that much cash with us. I don't even have euros and I don't know where to buy them. We are leaving from Mexico City. I greatly appreciate your advice, thank you.

I have been to italy, and I have never heard of that. If you do need money, their are banc-o-mats all around italy. As long as you have your handy credit card, you can use the atm. beware of gypsies!

have fun!

The Embassy is referring to the amount of money in your bank account, not cash. If you have to get a visa to enter Italy, the Embassy might want to know that you can support yourself for the time you are in the country.

You can use this Italian government site to determine whether you need a visa and the documents needed for entry into Italy. http://www.esteri.it/visti/home_eng.asp The requirements depend on citizenship, residence, duration and purpose of your stay in Italy. Assuming you're a citizen and resident in Mexico going to Italy as a tourist for less than 60 days, you don't need a visa. However, as noted on the site, you could be asked for documentation justifying the reasons for and duration of your stay. This could include proof of means of support, a return ticket, and/or lodging information such as your hotel reservation. The required economic support depends on how many people there are and how long you intend to be in Italy. This page shows you how to calculate it: http://www.esteri.it/visti/sussistenza_eng.html. If you're in a group of two or more people staying 5 days or less, you need € 212.81 per person total. The daily amounts apply if you stay more than 5 days. It's € 26.33 per day per person for 6 to 10 days if you're in a group.

You don't have to have cash - traveller's checks or a recent statement from your bank account and an ATM card on an international network are okay. Traveller's checks are not widely accepted here though.

I have never been asked for this kind of information either here in Italy or anywhere else. Nor do I know anyone who did not require a visa to have to show this information including some people from the Mexican branch of the company.
