Also are the menus in ALL italian? (my guess is yes)
A. The menu they give you when you first sit down will most likely be in italian, but most restaurants have english versions that you'll need to request.
& Do most employees act gloomy and pissed off unlike cheery and happy in USA?
A. Employees as in the waitstaff? Not really. The ones I've encountered are very nice and helpful - so don't stress!
There is not starbucks in italy correct?
A. No starbucks in Italy....yet. There are a few Starbucks in some parts of Europe (ex. England) and there is rumor that they will most likely spread to other parts. I was a Starbucks addict before I went to Europe, but believe me - the coffee in Italy is way better than any coffee you'll ever get at Starbucks. You'll find yourself missing it when/if you return to the U.S.
The coffee is also served in MUCH smaller portions than in the U.S. - they drink espresso/cappuccinos so at first you are wondering why they just gave you a cup the size of a dixie cup - but you'll soon get used to it. SOME places even make a little design in your coffee with the cream (one waiter made a heart with the "foam" in my cappacino - so awesome!)
After I got back from Italy I never ordered another large Starbucks again - it was just.too.big. ---and wayyyy weaker than Italian coffee!
Lastly, How are "Flip Flop" Sandals viewed in fancy restaurants? Will i be turned away from entering?
I'd treat it the same way as in the U.S. - it depends on the restaurant. You may get a few snide remarks/glares but they will only refuse you service if it is a five-star, very formal restaurant (i.e. tuxes and gowns).
HOPE THAT HELPS! :) |

If you go to Italy in the tourist cities, you will almost always find an English speaking waiter. The "tourist" city restaurants usually have English menus and many words are cognates. I wouldn't suggest the flip flops unless you are a daring person. The employees are very well natured people and I made friends with nearly every one I had.
I was eating at a restauranthotel and the food was horrible. I sent it back so I may take it to my room and "eat it" or rather toss it in the trash. The waitress became enraged. She stalked up to my table and steamed in broken English, "You vaunt doggy bag?!" The entire restaurant had its eyes on me. I nearly shrunk into my chair as I gave my best "puppy eyes" and said yes. I hurried up to my room and disposed of the bag in glee. |
