Do northern Italians look down on southern Italians?

A northern Italian guy once told me, snobbishly, that the southerners were "not really Italian".
Additional Details

Yes, our italians of the north part don't see really good the people from the south part because we noticed sincerely that they are downgrade in the progress and their mind is really lazy and strange...
For example the adversity for the south people start at the school i think...because in the school of the northen part of Italy the teachers are really alot from the Southern Part because there there'isn't work for they.
And comparing they with our Northen Part teachers are really differents: strange lazy and with really strange behaviors and opinions...
In fact, as anyone have already told, there the Lega Nord, a party, that dont really like so much the suothern people...that's a division in Italy i think...2 opinions and 2 ways of thinking.
And if you go in the southern part you can see landscapes and town like 1 century ago! they don't have done alot of progress....they are quite backlog...
Hope to helped you a little,
(sorry for my bad english)
Bye

oh, definitely. i agree with mark005 above. those northies look down upon us southies simply because we are smaller and darker and not quite as industrious or clever. and Rome doesn't really count because Rome is Rome and its people are neither northern nor southern; they just like the pope, even though the pope is german. but I have a neighbor who is from Milan and she really does down on me, even though she's shorter than me and has to wear high-heeled shoes.

i'm from the north italy....yeah, the northen italian think the southern italian are stupid etc...i think it's because the southern, often or always, think their traditions and their citys are better than the "our"...
i know a lot of peolpe that are proud!!!! but i like them:) they are so friendly.....the peolpe are stupid to be racism!! we live in ONE WORLD!! but we can do anithing!!:) bye....

sorry 4 my english.......surely wrong...but i'm 15!!! bye.....

Some closed-minded person do. But fortunately most italians are intelligent and love their country.

some do. There is even a group called Lega Nord or Northern League. They are based in Northern Italy and want to secede from Italy and form a separate country

Generally, Italy is a cohesive country and people bond pretty well. As to the talk about the northerners looking down on sutherners, it happens all the time. But nobody in Italy would like to dismember the country. Italy is Italy, a lovely country.

Italy just like any country, you'll find the good, bad
and real ugly.it's true that the northern region do see the people of the South in a different way
but it's not easy to foreigners to notice.Italy has very old & strong history that once was small republics and joined together to make a country
which is the Republic of Italy.if you travel around you'll see different culture, food & accent.
In the North, you'll find the Italian industry.
In the South, you'll find the farm lands.
The South are more closer to Africa &the M.Sea.
and their skin is little darker,W/some exception.
The North are more closer to western Europe
and their skin is fair in color,W/some exception.
Thanks to God,they're under one flag.

From what I learned, yes. The north wants to separate into their own country. They think of the south as poor subsistence farmers who cost them money. The north is more focused on manufacturing and the south is more underdeveloped and rural. The north also feel like they are a different ethnicity from the south as they have lighter features.
