I'm italian and I speak fluent english because I've been travel abroad many years but generally I can say the level of english speaking in italy is low,by the way you shouldn't have any problem in hotel, train station ,airport and wherever you asking information to younger, so don't worry if you come in italy you'll enjoy..still a beatiful country
ciao bella!!!!

Well, i'm italian, i speak a fluent english because i've been going once a week to an english teacher since i was 16.. so, for 5 years...
But well, it's true say ingthat no many italians speak english...
In the rest of Europe, where all speak english (except on France, Spain) they have movies, tv, all in english language, with the subititles in their own language,,,, while Italy, France, Spain and Germany, they have tv, movies, all speaked in our language.
So, the best way to speak a fluent english is just study it hard.
But if you go in some touristic places you'll find lot of people speaking english... expecially shop's owner, restaurant, hotel exc exc...
ciao

In the cities, most people whose work brings them into contact with tourists speak English, ranging from fluently to a lot of mime and guesswork. (But if you try your phrase-book Italian on them, they're so delighted, no matter how execrable your pronunciation, you feel like you've been given a gold star!)

Luckily a lot of Italians speak English.I guess most hotels and tourist places would employ English speaking people. However,English is a widely spoken second language in most European countries so it is most likely that the younger generation will speak English anyway.
