They speak English in the large cities. Get a phrase book and use it before you go. If they see that you are trying to communicate in Italian. They will try to show off their English. Italian has some pronunciation differences from English. An emphasis on a different syllable can mean an entirely different word. I carry a notebook for writing the word so others can understand. |

Hi,
Italian schools are excellent and Italians start learning English at school when they are 6yrs of age.
Every school until University have mandatory english lesson, some schools teach English more in depth, but if you're lucky you'll find plenty of people to talk to! |

Young people study English (even in small cities and towns) all over Italy. they also study French, German and even Spanish. Some even Latin & Greek.
Not everyone is fluent in English because there isn't always the chance to practice it unless you lve in an area where there are many tourists. You should all the same practice some Italian - the basics like - "I don't speak Italian" = "Non parlo italiano"....
The great thing about the Italians, unlike the French and maybe even the English, is that they are eager to help if they see a tourist is having a problem. They'll TRY to understand you and this is one of the (many) positive points about visiting Italy. |

Well, open up your Italian books and start learning! If you don't want to bother learing at least some Italian, just stay at home. To answer your question, some do and some don't. |

Here english is taught in all the schools anyway, like everywhere in the world, people hate it if you don't even try to speak their lenguage. Don't worry because italians will be really open and kind-hearted towards you but it would be better if you tried at least. It looks rude when someone comes here pretending to be back home, and it's the same thing for all the other countries. Just try to learn simple but important things such as: Buon giorno(hello/good morning); Grazie (thank you); Buona sera (good evening); Ciao(hello/bye informally); Arrivederci(bye formally); Si(yes); Scusi (excuse me). |
