Do they still say "ciao bella" to young women in Italy? ? |
I'm going to be travelling to Italy soon. I was wondering, I've heard the stereotypes of Italian men being very forward and complimentary. Coming from Canada this is kind of hard for me to understand, but yeah, I'm just wondering, is this true? Has anyone been there and experienced it first hand?
i've also heard that if you wear a skirt you will get more attention (same with shorts)? |

Only between friends is not common between strangers and it would be considered a bit wierd....ciao bella actually can be translated with hello darling and even women say between them when they are very close |

hmm "ciao bella" is more just with groups of friends and certainly with small children, rather than to a local love interest :P
it can be said to them yes but it wouldn't have the same meaning as if we said "hey beatutiful" to a girl we liked" |

Italian men can be forward but are not generally rude and not nearly as aggressive as American men can be. Ciao is said as an informal "hi" and ciao bella is often said to young ladies but more often to children or even dogs. As far as skirts and shorts, a few years ago we never saw women wearing these, they are more common now but are generally worn with tights underneath. I was told once that women who wear shorts are looked at like prostitutes but, like I said, I see them a lot more often now. Mostly the type of woman that wears short skirts and shorts are very young, teenagers and twenty somethings. Women here tend to dress more formally or business like than Americans do on a day to day basis. |

Yes. They still say ciao bella :D
I just don't know if you'll get more attention if you're wearing shorts. LOL. But it's already winter here. So, maybe you'll really get so much attention if you wear shorts during winter! :D |

I went to Italy earlier this year, it was winter time so I don't know about what happens when you where a skirt/shorts, but I could imagine that they would go wild for it. They are definitely more forward. We(2 blonde girls in our 20's) arrived in Rome we walked out of the train station and men were pulling over in their cars asking if we needed a ride. A policeman jumped out of his (parked) car and blew a kiss to us. A lot of men you pass will give you a check out and usually say something in Italian (my friend is fluent in Italian so she would translate) or they would stick to english and say things, like "you are so beautiful" and someone said "where are you from....paradise".I went to the Vatican without my friend and had a few offers of tour guides from guys, and one was kinda hard to shake, but he did point out some interesting things about Rome that I would not have known without him. So it is kinda corny and you just have to laugh and not take it to seriously, and just take it as a compliment and know they say it to everyone probably. Rome was way more flirty like that, then we went to Florence and lastly Venice and it really cools down the more north you go. Have a good trip and have fun. |

Italian men can be veeery forward, to the point of being downright rude.
I'm Italian, and when I moved ot the UK - age 23 - I couldn't believe how much more polite and respectful men were. It was a dream to be able to walk around without being harassed!
You don't really need to wear anything special (a lot of men do this while in groups, just for fun, not because they mean much with it), although if you do wear a skirt or shorts, be prepared to some whistling and comments.
Mind you, some women like receiving all this attention, and I understand it can be flattering -for a while. On daily basis it can become a real bother. |

Yes, we still use this expression.
My boyfriend uses it everytime he closes the phone for a conversation and it makes me feel good.
Yes women here get more attention when they wear short skirts or shorts ( we started wering shorts not too long ago)
but a beautiful girl (like me lol) gets attention even if she wears a normal jeans.
Italian men are very hot and they don't "sleep"
In Naples guys here start talking to women they don't even know to get their phone number.
this is called "posteggia" in my dialect |

Well.. it's still in use but it depends on the type of woman/girl you deal with :) some of them may find it not so enjoyable!
About the way to attract attention yes.. surely a nice woman/girl with skirt or miniskirt will attract men's attention..but I think this happens also in Canada :)
Nice girls are always noticed.. wherever they are :)

Hi! I'm italian, I suggest you to don't say "ciao bella" to a girl you don't know, it's not polite. You can tell it to your friends.
I think everywhere in the world if you wear a skirt you get more attention, if you are a woman also with shorts, but it's not a misbehaviour here, just don't enter in a church with a miniskirt. |
