I'm italian, please don't believe to native AZ "But, as a female, you will spend a lot of time fending off lecherous Italian men and being grabbed on the street. There is not a lot of respect for women in Italian culture."
If you come here it's all okay. Of course if you go in some illfame quarters... but I think that is the same also in your country!
If you came here, have a nice trip!
Ciao!

Dear "nativeAZ", am italian, from Florence, Why u said that we don t respect woman? I believe that u wasn t luky here in Italy...and i want to said to all the americans girls that visit Italy, that MANY times the albanians guys that lives here speaks to the americans girls like italians, but they are NOT italians. My best firend is DARA, from Los Ang, she lives here in Florence. The first guy that she meet in Flornce was an albanian, but he said to Dara: am italian.. ONLY after 3 months of frecuency Dara can see the passport of him .. So, please, ask to show the passport..Thanx and sorry for my orrible egnlish. Bye , Fabio. an italian guy that respect girls, ALL the girsl.

Dear "tabitha85730", first of all, sorry for my english. Can u tell me where did u live? Am from Florence, and the first community of strangers that lives here are the Albanians, but the second community is.... the Americans fro USA. So, my question: why in a city (Florence) of 500,000 inhab. lives 12,000 US citizens? They likes the Italians pigs, or the trash..or the BIGGEST prices of the universe?
PS: Am Italian, am NOT pig.

I'm English ..but I live in Italy..I've been here since 1990..it's a really nice place to live..the climate the people...not to mention food and fashion...I was amazed to see what those 2 stupid girls wrote...I bet they've never even been here...it really isn't like what they describe...I know it isn't paradise on earth..but the main problems here regard bureaucracy and the politicians ...the Italian people are great..

I am an American who used to live in Italy (Nervi - Liguria). I was just reading the responses here and thought I would give my two cents:

Italy is absolutely beautiful! I cannot think of another country that has the history, culture and variety that Italy has. It has the mountains, a huge coastline, vineyards, museums, cathedrals - not to mention all of the fabulous things the big cities and small villages have to offer.

Someone else mentioned the trash problem. When I was living there they did have a few days when the trash was not picked up due to some strike or other problem, but it was quickly resolved. I did not find anywhere there that was any worse than many other places in the world (New York City often has trash sitting on the streets until it is picked up - but it is a way of life since we all have trash!).

Regarding the animal problem: In my city there were some stray cats, but I never saw a dead one. Many people had dogs, but they were pets and were always walked on leashes and not roaming free.

Regarding the men - I think Italian men are wonderful! I am single and when I lived there I did not have any treat me disrespectfully or in a demeaning fashion. I am sure there are some Italian men that are capable of that, but again it can't be any worse than other countries and is not specific to Italian men.

Regarding disease: I have no idea what someone was talking about with regard to it being rampant in Italy. I never saw it, read about it nor heard about it on the news.

Regarding gypsies and others taking advantage of Americans: There are some pickpockets in the larger cities, but I had absolutely no problem with anyone the entire time I lived there or at any other time when I was there visiting. I do not look Italian and most people knew right away that I was American, but since I speak Italian fluently I was able to hear if they were talking about me - none did. And I found that most Italians, when they found out I was American, loved to try out their English by speaking with me and always treated me with respect.

There is so much to see in Italy that I don't think I will ever get to see it all in my lifetime - but I am sure going to try!

I'm sorry "AZ"...I've been living here for quite a while, and nobody has grabbed me....and I do look like my Avatar...so I really do not know where did you go, when you were here!!!

About the animal problem...We may want to remember "La Maddalena", my fellow American citizens left their cats and dogs stranded there. Now, the government has to look for a refuge for these animals.

About garbage??at least where I live we do not have that problem...Lombardy is 1 i n recycling in the country. Obviously, there's always going to be an uncivil person that doesn't follow the rule....

Italy is a beautiful place with lots of history to take in. Venice is a must visit before it finally sinks into the sea. But, as a female, you will spend a lot of time fending off lecherous Italian men and being grabbed on the street. There is not a lot of respect for women in Italian culture. But definitely still worth the visit.
-------------------------

I did a lot of travelling around Italy and many other countries, along with my female flatmates from france and Australia. Italy & Greece were the only places that were really a problem. You get grabbed unwanted everywhere and Italian men are the worst, won't take no for an answer, the follow you down the street grabbing your butt and harassing you until you jab them in the face. That is personal experience from us all. All the male respondents just don't get it. Still, like I said, not a reason not to go just don't go out on your own and learn some self defense first.

I live in Italy but will never visit again once I am gone. The reasons are: There is trash everywhere and they are constantly burning. Look into Italy's trash problem. You will see what I mean. They also have an animal problem and there are dead, bloated carcasses all over the place. It smells terrible here and this country is full of diseases.

Gypsies will steal anything from you they can.

Everything is overpriced and expensive here. If they know you speak English, they will try and screw you on prices, be on the watch for that, especially at fruit stands.

While speaking to other Italians, they tell me how they will do anything to make a few hundred bucks off an American, so don't stick out as one.

I understand Italian and overhear them constantly talking about how they wish the Americans and Brits would leave. I would not waste my money in an ungrateful country like this.

PS, The men ARE pigs. If you walk alone they think you are a prostitute and try to pick you up.
