Bright, breezy and colourful, the Beehive is more than your average hostel. In fact, it advertises itself as a hotel and art space, a reference to the guests' paintings that hang in the corridors. "Budget Rome" is an oxymoron
There is no budget in Rome these days, especially with the Euro being strong and dollar weak.
There are hostel-like places, like the Beehive, but most are not located in "safe" areas.

Sleepless in dogland

In Rome accomodation is expensive . We have also found that the breakfasts in hotels are poor - usually stale bread and treacle like coffee ( and thats it!)

There are some areas of rome that are a bit scary - so be careful when choosing accomodation based on price.

The best hotel we stayed in was called Hotel lancelot and was really close to the colluseum....it was friendly and clean and the breakfasts were good - definately worth checking out the website to see if your budget could stretch.

Well, someone before me gave quite a nice list!! You can easily get a double for less than 100 euro I think. I actually WORKED in a youth hostel in Rome and we rented a double room for в‚¬50 a night (although that was 2 or 3 years ago). All of the hostels in the city as well as budget hotels give their listings on this site: http://www.hostelworld.com , with full details in English- you can find prices and details of private rooms as well as availability (which is the most important thing because obviously the cheaper ones will become much less available in the summer - this site tells you if they are booked out yet or not). The site also has reviews from customers themselves and you book through it.

To be honest, I don't think there's such a thing as budget hotel in Rome, but when I travel, I usually check sites like www.activehotels.com, www.sidestep.com and www.hotels.com

The Sidestep.com site is great at comparing hotels, and filters results matching your requirements.

go to www.needahotel.com and book hotel porta maggiore, we stayed there and it was fine, couple of paint scratches on wall but at в‚¬80 a night for double room it was great value and the tram stops right outside the door

In Rome, for that money you would be at a Youth hostel

I wouls also check to see if lushbabe has just pasted and copied some old info off a website or has she personally been to all those places?
