This is very true. "Pepperoni" in Italian does mean peppers. To get a pepperoni pizza as americans know it your best bet is to order "pizza diablo". It is tomato sauce mozzarella cheese and a spicy sausage topping which is close to american pepperoni.

I actually had a similar experience in Germany. I ordered a pepperoni pizza in english and they brought a pizza with peppers!

"pepperoni" translates to what americans call "bell-peppers", and yes, italian pizza is very different that the American version. Its generally a lot thinner in Italy and is usually eaten as a snack or an apetizer, its not meant to be a whole meal.
