There is a love affair between the English and the Italians. Complete opposites. The Italians so friendly and say things as if you are the most important person in the world. They wave their arms around and drive their cars like lunatics. They love their clothes, and are heartbroken if there is a crease in the wrong place. They never use one word when ten will do. I dream about their buildings and cities as if it was magic land. In WW2 we were supposed to be enemies, but in truth neither the English nor the Italians really had the heart to be at war with each other.
My brother married an Italian and has lived in Allesandria in Northern Italy for many years. He loves Italian politics - a mixture of the Mafia, Communists, Roman Catholics, Right-wing bandits, crooked tycoons, extreme Nationalists, Bosnian terrorists, libertarians and prostitutes all plotting against one another. He thinks I am crazy to want to live in a boring quiet English village! |
