I have only heard this on one television show. Additional Details I am American and will obviously have a passport to get to the EU. I know that the European Union has open borders, but Vatican City is not part of the EU.

you dont need one to go to the vatican city.. you cant really tell that you are going into another "country" it just looks like you are trying to get into a building security wise. dont worry :)

No, not if you are already in Italy. You do need a passport to go to Italy though.
