Sometimes, in some canals that are closed, when the level of the water is low and the weather it's hot, it smells a little, but it's not too bad. It happens two or three days a year.

I heard the same comments before I went to Venice last year. We spent two days there and never noticed any bad odors. It's a wonderful place to visit.

There are distinct smells to every nation, including the U.S. You're just accustumed to it. But no Venice does not have a bad smell to it.

CiaoBella
it doesn't

I agree, everything smells like something. Being from that area, I do say that you get used to it fast!!!

HeddyS
I have heard that too but I was in January and there wasn't any bad smells. Maybe in the summer though and it gets all hot, or maybe when it floods , but when I was there it was neither hot or flooded (or smelly!).

We have been to Venice Loads of times.

It can smell a little around the back streets when its very hot.
But hey, Ignore it, take in the Splendour of Venice and enjoy it. You wont have time to think whether it smells or not !!
