I'm sorry to say, architectural barriers are everywhere...Awareness in this sense is only a recent thing here, and so only new sidewalks have ramps...Public buildings are better that way because there is a law making it mandatory for them to be accessible by wheelchair. However, be prepared to lots of obstacles...I swear constantly when I walk around, and I only have to move a baby cart....

I'm from Rome and I can tell u that all buses've got handicap facilities...also the footpades r a specific area to go up and down... more during Sunday all the historical area r pedastrian so u can easy walk or stay in the middle of the street.... underground stations r provided by lift (or elevator as u like!)... but I must tell the true that sometimes people park their car in the place where wheelchair going down... or can happen that the lift r broken and so on....
althroug if u r interested in visting my city and accept that something can go wrong with this facilities, u'll love my city! it's a perfect place for a couple... suggestive views and romantic walks in "the yellow light" during the night! all the fountains with their sound .... and u can forget the food!! deliciuos!

probably depends. i lived in naples for two years and it is definately not a good place for handicapped in a wheelchair anyway. lots of dangerous trash like needles and broken glass on streets and sidewalks. lots of bumps, cracks, lots of holes, etc... rome is much better taken care of though.
