The best way is to stay at a hostel or a Bed and breakfast.
Try www.cross-pollinate.com

You might be interested in a stay at a convent or monastery in Italy. These tend to be some of the best lodging bargains available. There are a number of them in Rome. In some places in Italy, a monestary stay may be free. see: http://www.monasterystays.com/?show=page... or http://www.santasusanna.org/comingtorome...

My brother and his wife stayed in a convent in Rome and loved it. A niece and nephew later did the same and also recommended it.

A good site for looking for places to stay in Italy is: http://en.venere.com/italy/ When you've selected a city and dates, you can search by particular area of the city and sort by price. Most hotels have reviews by people who have stayed there. The cheaper areas will be away from the center of Rome, but there are a number of reasonable low-cost places near the train station or the colosseum.

try to Grand Hotel Palazzo Carpegna it is outside Rome, but not far from the Cornelia Metro stop. Should not be to expensive. It is about 15-20 minutes on the metro from main things like the spanish steps.

When I backpacked through Italy my lifesavers were travel books by Frommers and Rick Steves. Both make suggestions for places to stay, eat, and be entertained at all price levels. They are very easy to read and are well organized. As far as places to stay, they list places as cheap as hostels to 5-star hotels.

I am not sure about your budget. But staying hostel or a church is not good at all the time, better you search intensively about selected hostel, if you go for it.

but I did one thing when i was there for long time, stayed outer skirt area in Rome. then we can get three star hotel at very good rate. took trans and even bus is fast to come central city. travel ling to hotel and the city every day was good for me, I learn lot about city and the people there while i am on train or bus.

and enjoyed at hotel with more facilities than poor hostel in Central area

If your on a budget I would highly suggest getting the Let's Go Italy book, there are a ton of money saving tips, plus reviews and cost of hotels, hostels and inns.

Rome like all big cities is expensive. Our initial trip we only stayed two days since our travel agent booked us into a hotel at $300.00 USD per night.

After that initial sticker shock, we found the Hotel Oxford on Via Bon Compagni. The hotel is charming and located just off the Via Veneto.

Our last trip we were able to save even more by renting an apartment. We rented a two bedroom two bath apartment and cooked our own meals. For a 10 day/two week stay this is probably your best bet.

We rented the Agosto apartment through the Oxford on Via Flavia. The building was very nice and the apartment spacious and clean with all the kitchen items included. www.hoteloxford.it
