The overnight ferries are HORRIBLE. Do not take them. They are full of dirty, smelly, loud gutter punks, vagabonds & gypsies and you will get no sleep, and you will arrive exhausted and irritated. I foolishly did this once, so I am warning you against it.
I recently drove from Rome to Aciriale in Sicily. I did this in less than a day, so going from Sorrento will be a piece of cake. Drive, and enjoy the beautiful scenery at your own pace. I warn you that the highway is awful (lots of construction), but it's still fun. You (obviously) have to take a quick ferry from the mainland to Messina, but it is cheap and easy and you can stay in your car or get out and watch-it's a short distance.
If you can't drive, then take the train. It's pretty cheap. If you want speed, you will need to take a flight from Naples (also not very expensive). But DON'T take the overnight ferry. You will regret it. |

You can certainly take the train or plane, or even drive (plus a short ferry ride), But my suggestion would be to take the ferry from Napoli. Napoli and Sorrento are very close so it will not be a problem to get to the port of Naples. There is an oovernight ferry that will take you to the port of Palermo. I believe that someone has already put up the link for it. |
