Like anything else, it varies a great deal. It depends on your flexibility, when you want to go, where you want to go, how long you want to stay, what class of accomodations you will accept, etc. You can stay in luxury resorts or youth hostels, you can fly first or business class and go direct, or you can get coach class connecting flights, you can tour the whole country or just stay in one city, you can go on an organized tour or just ride the rail around, etc. I went a couple of years ago and stayed for three weeks and spent a few thousand dollars, but that certainly isn't necessary. I loved it, though! If you're serious about it, do some research on sites like expedia, invest in some travel guides on Italy or speak with a travel agent. |

On two occasions I've flown to Italy for about $700. This is in the winter & fall. It pays to travel then because of reduced tourists. Try alternatives to Rome when flying in, like Milan's Malpensa. Once anywhere in Italy, you can take the train or cheap local flights to get where you want to go. |

It depends upon when and how you travel, where you stay, and how long you stay.
Nov - March is usually the least expensive time to fly since it is "off peak" tourist season.
You can stay in hostels for very little money, or you can stay in nicer hotels for $50-120 per night.
The food is also variable depending upon your tastes. |
