if you live in uk, everything in italy it's cheaper.
i'm italian, i live in venice, and i went to uk for holidays, i found everything expensive.
here things cost less then uk, so don't worry.
but here you have to pay attention, don't take taxi (they're very very expensive) just walk, if you want you can take vaporetto, it's cheaper, don't take the hotel in the center of venice, but out of it, like mestre or campalto (then you can go to venice by bus, in 10 minutes), don't eat near piazza san marco, food is twice expensive, in venice is everything expensive, so do everything out of it.
concerning the fly, you can take ryanair, but it doesn't go to venice, but to treviso, where you can take bus-navetta to venice (it's free, 1 hour), if you want to go to the airport nearer venic, you can take easyjet, it goes to tessera and then you take bus nr. 5 (1,10 euro, 20 minutes)

it all depends on everything. where you're going, where you're staying. my best suggestion would be to call a travel agent.

It is not the air prices that are going to kill you is everything else like hotel-motel,and food , you can still find very cheap tickets but everything else is going to be very expensive so be prepared hotel will run you around 100-300 a day and food conservatively now I am saying for 2 people 150 a day depending on if you eat at any fancy restaurants.

search cheapoair.com to give you an idea, but I would also check other sites. As for hotel, try hotels.com and just search the dates you want to go.

go to www.hotelalleon.com click on dove siamo, shows the map where it is, right behind the cathedral and St Marks square. Go to Cafe Florian after dinner for a glass of wine and dessert and listen to the band play.
