Many of the convents around the Vatican offer rooms to travellers. They are very basic rooms, usually with a shared bath, but they are clean and inexpensive. You can obtain information from your parish church in the States before leaving for Italy.

Cheap don't go there, the best hotel but not the most expensive is the Leonardo da Vinci on the Via die gracchi. It's within walking distance from all the best places to see in central Rome.Clean ,friendly staff and good food.
