Does anyone know what Verona, in Italy, is like? |
I am going to be staying there for 5 months as an exchange student, and I cant seem to find much information on Verona on the internet. I would love to know what it looks like, what kind of shops there are, and even what the local high school is like if someone has gone there. |

I live a little less than an hour south of Verona. It's a very nice place and located at the intersection of the major train lines between Milan (and France) to Venice and Naples/Rome to Munich and points north. Verona has a fairly large old town with a very good shopping area. There's an old Roman arena in town where the opera plays in the summer as well as other concerts. There's also a Roman theater. The castle often has interesting exhibits. There are a lot of interesting festivals during the year. The horse show is pretty big; next weekend, there's a busker festival. Verona is very close to Garda Lake which is the largest and cleanest of the Italian equivalent to the Finger Lakes in the US. In the mountains just north of Verona, there's a waterfall park in a small town called Molina.
You'll have a great time in Verona.
This site has some photos of various places in Verona: http://www.virtourist.com/europe/verona/index.html and more here: http://www.aboutromania.com/verona.html.
There's a webcam here: http://www.comune.verona.it/webcam/ all the material piled near the Arena are parts of the sets for the operas that play there. The city website is here, but it's in Italian: http://portale.comune.verona.it/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=391.
If you're here in September this year, this is a good event not too far from Verona: http://www.marosticascacchi.it/a_2_EN_9_1.html. It's only run every other year. |

This past May I was in Verona. We had a great time.
The Arena
In 1999, I went to Italy for the first time. I had the opportunity to see Puccini's opera La Tosca at the Arena. It was fantastic. The Arena is a must see.
The Arena, located outside the city walls, is a Roman amphitheatre built in the first half of the first century A.D. It is the third largest building of its type and is the most well preserved
The interior is open to the public. We took a tour of the Arena in May. It was great.

As you know Verona is called the City of Romeo and Juliet.
Juliet's House
For us, this museum was fascinating. The museum houses the furniturings from the 16th and 17th centuries as well as paintings and frescos relating to Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. . The balcony was added during the restoration of the house in 1936-1940.
In the courtyard is a statue of Juliet. It is said that if you rub her breast, you will have everlasting love.

Church of San Francisco al Corso
This is where the tragic of story of Romeo and Juliet is said to have began and ended. It is said that they were married here and this is where Juliet's tomb is.

It contains many historic buildings, sculptures with a popular and colorful market overflowing with fresh fruits and vegetables.
.
Personally, I like buying lunch from the market: buying some bread, a little meat, and some wine and then finding a little place in area to have a picnic lunch.
