Discover isn't accepted in Italy, so don't bother taking it with you. Visa & Mastercard are pretty widely accepted, and ATM cards can be used in ATMs all over the country to get local cash. I usually take out the maximum amount of cash an ATM will let me when I first arrive (they all have options to have the directions in English so no worries about not being fluent in Italian), pay for large purchases like hotels and big dinners with a credit card, then do the rest with cash.

Discover told ME (because when I have questions, I go to the source...best answers) that they have No outlets in any of Europe. NONE.
But you might want to call THEM to confirm that that hasn't changed in two years. It's an easy number. 1800- discover.
