A wise question to ask, since some people fall into the trap of thinking that the weather in Italy is always warm and sunny. As someone who lives in Italy (although not in Ferrara) I can assure you that it can get very cold and damp, although the saving grace of the Italian climate is that the sun usually puts in an appearance after just a couple days of grey and wet.
Ferrara is, as I'm sure you know, in the Po valley. That part of Italy can be fairly unpleasant in the winter due to heavy fogs and mists. It can also get quite chilly.
The webpage I link to below indicates that the average low in January is -1°C (31°F) and the average high only 5°C (41°F). I haven't been able to find any statistics on snowfall, but with temperatures in that range, I suspect it probably does happen. |

According to this forum, it did on January 3rd of this year.
"Da poco ma è asciuttissima. comincia ad intensificare."
[A little but it's very dry. It's beginning to snow harder.] |

I live very close to Ferrara. The past two weekends would have been a great time to be here - the hot air balloon festival is going on.
We may get a few cm of snow in a winter, but there really hasn't been much snow in the 9 years I've been living here. Some of my friends tell me that there used to be more snow, but it still wasn't much. As Al M said, it can be foggy here; however, on a clear day, you'll be able to see snow in the mountains to the north and south. |
