Have a look at the book Passion, Justice and Freedom by Letizia Battaglia. It's horrific.

Although today the killings are not so "out in the open" as she illustrates in the book (it was published in 1999), it's still going on behind closed doors and in much quieter ways. The book is shocking. The photos therein should answer your question.

Additionally, the Mafia is still alive and actively kicking in Sicily. Even as a tourist you have to watch your step in certain places. It's quite sad.

the MAfia today is in all Italy..in the north in the centre and in the south!!! maybe this criminal organizzation is more concentrare in the south than in the north!!!!

but...Italy is beautiful!!!!!!

and in USA?

yes mafia bothers alot of people in Italy, it's like a giant octopus with its tentacles everywhere...most of the people, especially in the south of the country, have to deal with it every day! Recently the primary intention to fight against mafia is spreading all over the country but there's still a lot of work to do and many high-profile personalities gave their lives for the cause.

Yes, i used to live there for 10 years (im 15 now). The Mafia pretty much "taxes" every business. EVERY business. When you wanted to open one, they gave you a fee. If you paid it, you went right ahead and opened it. If you didn't you weren't allowd to. The Mafia also asked for a fee from every store monthly. If you didin't pay it, they would come to your store and ask for something. This was known as the pizzu- a very big reason why people don't like to start a business there. The Mafia was pretty much everywhere. And yes, it is STILL a big issue

During my years in Sicily, two associates of my ex were executed for not repaying their debts. They chose to borrow from the mafia of their own free will, however. The typical citizen minding his own business is not in danger from the mafia.

While the Mafia might do its business in all Italy, open violence and shootings are mostly restricted to some areas in the South (near Naples, in Sicily, Calabria and Puglia).

Statistically, Italy is safer that the USA, an almost as safe as other European countries.

There is no such thing as a Mafia. We are just a very close brotherhood of sanitation workers.

The mafia is present in all of Italy - Not just in the South. The mafia "bothers" business people and sell drugs to your children. While a mafioso wouldn't walk up to and ask you for money he would certainly ask you for a cut of your business earnings for protection (from other mafiosi). The generally shoot each other.... but.... if happen to be in the way then you can easily take a bullet too.
