Does my itinerary seem do-able? |
I'm planning a 3 or so week trip to europe this August for myself and my boyfriend. We've both been to Europe earlier in our lives, but never without our families so I'm trying to be as prepared as possible. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to review my itinerary and see if it seems do-able or if any changes might be needed.
Our budget is up in the air right now. We're trying to get a feel for how much things will cost and then budgeting based on that. How much would you suggest budgeting (excluding flight) for transportation in Europe, lodging, food, entertainment/shopping/exploring?
I've been searching hosetlworld.com and looking for budget hotels. I've found some that seem nice and affordable, but if anyone has any suggestions as to where to stay (or places to specifically avoide) in the cities we're visiting, that would be greatly appreciated. I am also wondering what type of transportation you would recommend using with our time frame and such.
Finally, I'm wondering what you all would consider "must-sees" in the cities we're visiting or places you would highly recommend. We're really open to just about anything. Thanks for all of your help!!!
4 nights in Hamburg
4 nights in Munich
3 nights in Venice
3 nights in Florence
5 nights in Rome
We are very open to day trips to nearby towns or cool little places so feel free to suggest anything.
I have family in Hamburg and Munich so lodging will be completely free. I am considering taking one night out of Venice and adding it to Rome and perhpas doing a day trip to Pompei. Another idea I had was spending a night in Positano because this is a place my boyfriend always talks about and i think it would be a nice thing for him to visit again. Would either of these trips be do-able with the time alloted and transportation |

I suggest you to take a look at http://www.tripadvisor.com for suggestion and good advices for your trip. I always use it !
Since it seems you are looking for budget options, using a train from Venice to Florence and from Florence to Rome is surely the best choice. I only suggest to spend one or two days while you are in Florence for visiting Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano and the other village in the Chianti countryside. If you decide to take a private tour you can take a look at http://www.drivingguidetours.com . |

Yes it' good itinerary, I visited all those places and agree. If you cuold add a couple of days I think it would be fantastic.
I would make some changes, based on my experience.
Shift Hamburg with Lubek. Hamburg is a city destroyed in WWII and not so well rebuilt as Lubeck that is 30 min trip and a cheaper, nicer town. You can get the train to Hamburg in the morning and go back evenings. Hamburg has wonderful museums and the Binneralster area has one of the best Cafes in Europe. I sill remember thei Diabetikentorte!
Munich (apart for being one of the nicer town in Europe - at lest it was 25 years ago) has the Neue and Alte Pinacoteche, the Neue hosts my preferred modern painting "The man tired of life" the Alte has a lot Nearby is Fussen a pictoresque village.
I would stay out of Venice for lodging (unless you go to Hotel Ateneo - that is the one of a friend) may I suggest Ferrara? it's midway from Florence to Venice there are trains that go there every hour taking less than 100 minuets, maybe you can cut a little on Venice to see this wonderful town (Ferrara, I mean, I was born there, but you can check the importance of Ferrara in the middle age an Renaissance on the web). You can lose the Arena Chapel, it's not so great, but do not lose Giusto de Menabuoi frescoes in the Baptistery of Padua.
Neither forget the third Big City that lies between Venice and Florence, Bologna. Another vantage of beeing based in Ferrara is that you will be 50 miles from Ravenna. A must see!
Then go to Florence and Rome.
Have a nice trip. but be prepared also a fast food is more expensive in Europe than the US. |

I'm not sure where you have visited before, but in my opinion I don't think you need five days in Rome. A few sights can be seen all at once while in Rome. Also, if your travels happen to be toward the end of the month and you want to see the Sistine Chapel, on the last Sunday of each month admission is free. It only saves you about 30 euros for the two of you, but it's something. (Just plan to get up early to wait in line.)
If you deduct some days from Rome I'd add them to Florence, each day there is a huge market where you can barter prices and find some really fantastic pieces. It might be worth it to spend an extra day there. Also, if it's not on your to do list in Florence, I would definitely recommend seeing the Boboli Gardens. I wasn't interested in the museum but the garden itself, well you'd have to see it for yourself to understand.
If you're interested in maybe seeing somewhere else, Siena is a gorgeous little place in Tuscany. Lodging and food is a bit cheaper because it's not as touristy. There's fantastic small museums and sighs there as well. Like Florence, on Wednesday during the day they also have an open market where you can barter. Being that it's a small city it's not overwhelming and you get a totally different feel of Italy.
I know this didn't really answer your questions, but I definitely think your itinerary is do-able. Expenses come up quick when traveling in Europe, being that the exchange rate is worse for us, try not to take out too much cash from ATMs. For places like Florence, Venice and Rome you'll be spending a lot because each attraction is a decent price. While shopping, try to keep it in markets because the shops get quite expensive.
Try to always stay in hostels as it is much cheaper. I once paid 18 euros for one night, however I stayed with five random people. If you're willing to sleep with others it will be much cheaper, but I can understand if you're not. Keep checking the website and also try some such as, http://www.europeanhostels.com/ and http://www.hosteleurope.com/ I like the second website because users rate the hostels.
For cheap European flights check, http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/ if you thought of going else where.
Anyway, sorry for rambling and not being much help but I hope you have a great trip! |
