Dolomites, Lakes, or Cinque Terre at Christmas in Italy?

Dolomites, Lakes, or Cinque Terre at Christmas in Italy?

I don't know where to spend the Holidays in Italy? On December 16, I have to leave Bergamo, and I can go one of three directions, all leading to different parts of Italy. Eventually I will see most of it, but it's where to go first, and specifically where to go during late December I'm concerned with.

After Bergamo, I can head

1) South to the Liguria coast, Cinque Terre, and up to Genoa
2) East to Brescia, Lake Garda, and up the Dolomite Alps to Trentino/Alto Adige, and on to Belluno before turning around (note: I don't like skiing, thought I love scenic photography)
3) West to Lecco, Como, Maggiore lake district

There you have it, three clear options. So where would you go first, and why? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Note: The two destinations that don't get picked will be seen in January.

If you like scenic photography then route 2 would be a good choice - although all three are scenic. There are some nice waterfalls - one visible near Trento, and several castles. The Christmas markets are running in the Trentino/Alto Adige region. I was at the ones in Bolzano and Trento a couple of weekends ago and they were very good again this year. The food stands at the markets are excellent - especially the canederli in Trento and the melted cheese sandwiches in Bolzano. There's plenty of snow on the mountains - I took a couple hundred photos there. Walk out to the Runkelstein castle there - it's pretty nice. The Ice man is in the museum at Bolzano too. The castle in Bolzano (Castello Buonconsiglio) is worth visiting. There's a good cycle of the seasons in one of the towers. Merano is another of the towns with a good Christmas market. There's a nice walk along the river to the waterfall. Brescia has a very good art gallery that puts on major shows worth seeing and the castle is nice. I live about an hour south of Garda Lake - you should be able to get some nice photos there although it's pretty quiet on and around the lake at this time of year.

This isn't the best time of year to be out on the trails around Cinque Terre. I wait until April most years before heading there.

I would go east to Lake Garda and the surrounding areas of Trentino/Alto Adige, Brescia and the Dolomite Alps. I used to live in Verona which is nearby and it's beautiful during the holiday season. I would visit Verona and Venice too.

I visited Cinque Terre a few summers ago. It's one of my favorite places, but the weather is not great there for a vacation in the winter!

I just got back from Cinque Terre. It has so much to see, and all five beaches are connected by an easily accessible train. It has everything! Mountains, scenery, beaches, old churches, greenery, towers. Im just not sure how the weather will be in December. It might be rainy in the winter...in which case, the beach may not really be ideal. I've only been to Italy in the summer when it is hot, so I don't really know.

Go to the Dolomites. Its the mountains and perfect Xmas feeling there. Cinque Terre is a sea place and useless tho amazingly beautiful, but not in the kind of weather in northern Italy right now.
The lakes would be nice also but second to the Dolomites tbh

Hi, I'm italian, and I live in Desenzano (Brescia) on the Garda Lake.
The second option is the best. Visit garda lake and visit the Dolomite Alps (they're wonderful with their tipical coluor pink).
I hope you enjoy Italy anda enjoy the Garda Lake!..visit Desenzano!!

i would go to lake garda and dolomites first, because you are near to them when you leave bergamo, then i would go down to the ligurian region then across to lake como and maggiore. but which ever way you do it it wil be briliant, they are all lovely regions of italy. xx
