I am Italian so I can tell you in 4 or 5 hours you can stay in Florence from Milan Malpensa. You must add 2 hours more about to go to Rome. Of course you must keep high velocity all the time, but you can because the road is on optimal conditions. Have nice trip! |

listen to the others, take the train --- especially when going from Milan to Florence then on to Rome, it's also cheaper. Rent-a-cars (autonoleggio) can be expensive, not only to rent, but to park somewhere at night. There is definitely going to be garage (parcheggio) parking fee. If you leave it on the street, you better believe that the night persons know the difference between a rental and a privately own vehicle. |

Im' afraid it is not so near as you think. It can take four hours to Florence and seven hours to Rome. You'd better take a train to Florence, and fly to Rome (Ryanair offers cheap and quick flights from Orio al Serio to Roma Ciampino).
But if you stay in Italy little time, my advice is: stay in Milan and enjoy Milan. The most tourists think Italy is a small country and they can visit everything in few days, it's totally wrong. Italy is large, the most countries offer lots of things to see and you risk not to see really anything, to waste a lot of money to spend most your time in a car or in a train. |

It would take around four hours to get to Rome and a little less to drive to Florence. |

I believe that it takes between 4-6 hours to get to Rome. You don't really want to drive on the Autostrada though. The Italians are extreme drivers and do not follow the speed limit. They'll run you over in a heartbeat. You also have to know the laws and road signs that can be confusing. If you do drive watch out for bicyclers, motorcyclers, etc. If you get in a wreck with one it's automatically your fault in most cases and if there is a fatality that is automatic jail time. You also have tolls to pay everytime you enter a new province. The traffic can get pretty backed up at the toll booths. We waited in traffic for 4 hours getting into Venice from the border. I would take the train. It's faster, cheaper and a lot less hassle. Check www.trenitalia.it for train schedules and prices. Take the Eurostar. Good luck! |
