Emilia Romagna? |
I am going on a driving holiday to the Emilia Romagna region of Italy. Can anyone give a few highlights (and lowlights!) of this region for the tourist?
If you were to think of a broadly similar region / area of the UK, which would it be? |

I've been living in Emilia Romagna for the past 8 years. There's a lot to like here. One of the top highlights is the food - parma ham, aceto balsamico, parmigiano-reggiano, tons of pasta, ... There are at least 13 different drives in the region oriented around food. There are lots of festivals throughout the year. see: http://www.sagreedintorni.it/def_sagremese.htm
Don't miss Ravenna - the mosaics are spectacular.
Ferrara has a good old town - castle, duomo, several historic buildings.
The Teatro Farnese in Parma is interesting as are the duomo and baptistry- they also have a baseball stadium (rare in Italy). There are several castles in the area around Parma (Soragna, Fontanellato, San Secondo, Torrechiara, Felino, ...). - http://www.parmatravel.it/parma/castelli-parma.html
The Ferrari museum is just outside Modena. If you're interested in ceramics, there's a good museum in Forli.
Cento has one of the best Carnevale celebrations in Italy (but it's not the season for that now)
Great beaches at Rimini, to Gabbice Mare. San Marino is a separate country, but definitely worth a visit...and good scenery in the Apennines.
Lot's of Verdi sites. His home Villa Verdi is worth visiting.
See this site for a lot of good info:

About the only low light is that in August most of us are on vacation and a lot of restaurants, shops, etc are closed. |

In summer is full of tourist, Emilia e Romagna. Night life is very high. Very good food. Bologna an old city very interesting. Friendly people. Brighton can in someway look like Rimini. |

You must try PIADINA!! It's simply delicious!! And then lasagne, cannelloni, tortellini...
Rimini and Riccione are very popular in summer, great nightlife but also lots of people. |
