Entry Requirements to Italy - Confusing?

I'm confused about the conflicting entry requirements that I have seen for Italy. US State Department page says the passport should be valid for 90 days after the travel, but they have another page on Schengen countries that says the 90 days is a must. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Visa page, says I only need a valid passport, but no mention of 90 days at all. Does the passport need to be valid for 90 days after the travel or not? (I'm trying to plan a trip where my passport expires 84 days after the travel.)

U.S. Department of States provides some travel advices which are not updated or are based on wrong interpretation of provisions.

Schengen visa applicants need a passport which is valid for at least 3 months beyond their intended stay. Visitors of visa exempted countries meanwhile just need a passport which is valid on arrival .. http://www.esteri.it/MAE/EN/Ministero/Servizi/Stranieri/ServReteConsolare.htm#entry .. since there is an embassy or consulate of all visa-waived countries available in the Schengen zone where they may get a replacement travel document. If you check the IATA database .. http://www.klm.com/travel/ch_en/travel_information/travel_planning/travel_clinic/visaform.htm .. which is used by aircraft companies to determine document requirements of international travelers you will see that you just will need a passport which is valid on arrival. Since your U.S. Government requires you to enter with a valid passport .. http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/vacation/ready_set_go/air_travel/documents_needed.xml .. you will simply need a passport which is valid during your period of travel to include the return home.

I live here in Italy and you CAN stay in the country for 90 days! It doesnt matter when your passport expires after you leave here. It just HAS to be valid the time you are here!

Yes, your passport has to be valid for 90 days after your departure date. I called the Italian Embassy in Washington, DC to verify that very point.
