By far and away, Venice's biggest attraction is its canals, since churches and historic buildings can be found throughout Europe, but Venice's waterways are unique. I recommend not overdoing the formal sightseeing, but instead hire a gondalier, and have him guide you through the smaller canals where people live and there are small shops. You'll get to experience the real Venice which many tourists won't see.

i went to venice this summer and my favorite part was the back alleys. You feel the real essence of the city. And you should take a gondola ride at sun down it is amazing.
