I live in a town near Florence...
Florence is the center of italian Renaissance, it is one of the most cultural and artistic cities in Italy and one of the most tourist...
Florence is the main city of Touscany but we don't say wich is the capital, we use the word "capoluogo"....
The city is not very big: there are about 370.000 of inhabitants and you can visit the historic center in about 3 days:

The most important and bautiful monuments are (in my opinion):

The Dome ( one of the biggest cathedral in the World) :

The baptistery ( in front of the Dome)...

Signoria Square (and palazzo vecchio):

Uffizzi Museum:

This is the official website: http://www.uffizi.com/

Where you can see the very famouse paintng "The birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli...

Accademia Galley:

Where you can see the David of Michelangelo ( a very famous sculpture)...

Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge):

Food (gelato, wine, Tuscan cuisine), Fashion (Gucci, Ferragamo...), Leather (many markets and factories), Art (Accademia, Uffizi).

It feels very international and cozy. You can walk everywhere because it's relatively a small city. Sophisticated and relaxed.

If you're nice to the people they are nice to you, but the citizens can get frustrated by swarms of demanding tourists! As with any foreign country try learning a few phrases and be polite.

It is very expensive, definitely one of the most expensive of the Italian cities but well worth it (IMO!).

Hi, I'm italian, I've been living in Firenze for 4 years.
Florence is a cosmopolitan city that didn't lost his historical side.
Most of the foreigners who go Florence are interested in Renaissance culture, history and art.
Don't miss to visit Uffizi museum and the Dome.
The city center with its historical architecture it's not so big, you can walk it in a day and feel the typical artistic atmosphere. I suggest to take a walk there during the week, not in the weekend cause it may be too crowded.
You'll find something interesting also if you look for big fashion stores famous all over the world.
And don't forget to try the local cuisine too!
If you have time I recommend a visit to the Chianti hills, a beautiful places in the countryside.

The atmosphere is a lot like a big city, but you're too amazed at the architecture to notice :)
