Fortunately, I've never had to sit around Fiumicino for 13 hours since it's either the end or the start of my journeys by air these days.

I suggest you make sure you have a good book, a good video game or some other way to pass the time you'll spend there. It may well be possible for you to sleep; I suggest you check out the website I link to below for some advice on this.

As you'll see, that site puts Fiumicino at number 10 in the worst airports for dozing. Higher on the list are Delhi, Bombay and Moscow, which says something.

I think that Fumicino is a disgrace to Italy: big, confusing and just plain generally grubby, it's a terrible introduction to Italy. Compared to Amsterdam's glitzy Schipol, Fiumicino looks like something from the third-world. It even compares badly to London Heathrow, since at least Heathrow can say that the reason it's less than pleasant is because it's a far busier airport than Fiumicino.

Yeah...that airport sucks. I had to fly out of there for France. Boring.

Well, an airport isn't actually a place to have fun: it's a place where you can take a flight and where you arrive with a flight. I live in Rome, so I've been several times in Fiumicino Airport, and i can say that it's a normal big airport, just like the other big airports i've seen in my life: Gatwick, Heathrow (London), De Gaulle (Paris), El Prat (Barcelona), Malpensa (Milan)...

If you are satisfied to go around stores, restaurants and stuff like this you'll like it. If this is not enough for you, near the airport you'll find Parco Leonardo, one of the biggest malls in Italy. Check it out here: http://www.parcoleonardo.it/

And if it's not enough... well... you can anyway take a train, and you'll arrive to Rome in 45 minutes: you can give a look to the Coliseum, St. Peter, the Pantheon and come back to the airport, i think you've time nough to do it.

For a big city, it sucks.
