Florence in February?

Hello
I got a super special offer ticket for Florence in the period 19 - 24 Feb, 2009. This period is OK for Florence? I mean can I explore the city in this period? How is the weather?

I live about two hours from Florence and enjoy going there in February. It can be cold, but the weather isn't usually too bad. One nice thing is that it isn't usually so crowded. Carnevale will be running in Italy in February - that's a good time to be here. I don't know the calendar for Florence yet this year, but one of the more well-known Carnevale events is in Viareggio which is an easy train ride from Florence - there will be a big parade there on the 22nd. You could also catch a train to Venice for a day to see some of the Carnevale activities there. A chill in the air just makes the vin brule better.

The Ultimate Guide to Florence is a book written by Suzanne Morrison that I recommend for your review to help you prepare for your trip. She travels to Italy every year and Florence is among her favorite destinations there.

I went during Christmas break and what I experienced was rainy rainy rainy weather. It wasn't anything like the midwest in the winter, but it was definitely not sunny and pretty.

I'm wondering under what circumstances I would not want to go to Florence if I had the time, money and a cheap air fare?

The Uffizi and the Academia close during the winter?
The shops, restaurants and the Duomo close their doors?
5 feet of snow and no one in the city knows how to get it off the sidewalk?

Even if that were the case Academia go and tramp a mile through the snow to the Piazzale Michelangelo just for the view of the city.

If your trepidation is such that you can imagine an inconvenience due to weather that would ruin a Florentine vacation, I wouldn't go. Stay safe where you're at where there is no ice, no hurricanes and no wildfires.
