All said above is correct, go look to Trenitalia site for schedules and all other infos; a further suggestion I can personally give you: between Florence and Milan you can choose a Cisalpino train instead of Eurostar or InterCity: Cisalpino is fast as Eurostar but cost less, like InterCity; I also found their carriages are more comfortable and less noisy then Trenitalia ones; I know a lot of people who by will choose Cisalpino instead of Trenitalia and are disappointed since Cisalpino's end of the line in Italy is now in Florence and not in Rome anymore as it was in the past.
You can anyway still refer to Trenitalia site for both infos an buying ticket for CS trains.

Train travel is much less expensive in Italy than in the U.S. or other countries in Europe. We traveled exclusively by train last summer, and though I can't remember exact amounts, it was very reasonable. There is a very good website where you can look up schedules and prices, and book directly from the U.S. It's a bit complicated, because I think you have to sign up and then are given a password code of some sort (sent to you in an e-mail) to use when making your reservations. If you know the exact dates and times of travel, you make your seat reservations, pay by credit card (very secure) and print out an e-ticket which has all the information and a bar code. You just get on the train, find your car and seat, and the conductor will scan in your e-ticket. This process works for travel between larger cities, but I think there are some local trains where you have to purchase at the station. In an effort to compete with low-cost airlines, www.trenitalia.com offers a limited number of discount seats on ES or EuroStar trains. Don't check one train and assume you've found the lowest price. If you're flexible, check a few times and even a few dates. Of note, ES trains are the most expensive as they are direct. If time is not a factor consider a train with an IC or R beside it.
