Wherever you go in Italy you'll have opportunity to enjoy good food. Is almost impossible to be too specific town by town since here even a small village has its own exclusive specialities.
My main suggestion is to avoid the big restaurants (where the cooking is rather international, not really Italian, nearly similar to the Italian restaurants located abroad) and go instead to the small "trattoria" and "pizzeria";also yr pocket will thank you for yr choice...!!
Over there ask the waiter or the owner (very often in these spots they are the same person..!!) and he will be more than happy to suggest you the best dishes of their local. In the smallest places you might meet with some difficulties if you can't speak or understand Italian but in this case let them chose on yr behalf and you'll not blame them at the end (somethimes is better you do so even if you can speak and understand them..!!)
What must be clear with you is that the food in the whole Italy has absolutely nothing to do with what you can eat at the different Italian restaurants and Pizzeria out side of Italy. Just to explain you the difference you'll find in case you know already something of our cooking because you've eated it either in the States or other Countries outside of Italy, you must believe that anytime I've travelled abroad I've never been at an Italian restaurant or tasted a pizza (and I'm not the only one here doing that). Don't ask other people for what to eat or let's say even better "ASK NOT WHAT YOU MAY EAT IN OUR COUNTRY BUT ASK WHAT OUR COUNTRY MAY LET YOU ENJOY" !!!.
Just come here and leave yourself fall into our food. Don't damage yourself and jeopardize all this heaven by drinking some coke or beer. Take just water if you don't drink alchool at all or if you do taste a good wine (a few of them are super). You don't need to spend a fortune for the Brunello or other costly wines, Order in the trattoria "il vino della casa" (home's wine) and just decide if you want drink it red or white.
That's it !!
Welcome to Italy and enjoy my country. |

If you are going to travel to a couple of cities around Italy make sure you have a pasta dish and some pizza everywhere- you'll see the difference between each city.
................plus you'll come back to the US and never eat Italian again!!!!! hah haha.........

We lived over on Sardinia for two years and I cannot say enough good things about the food in Italia! Everything is fresh. The breads, pasta, meats, veggies...
Definitely try pizze...very different from you are used to here but very good.....In Venice there are a lot of little vendors that sell pizza, calzones....Try a calzone they are good. At the Ristorante's try the different courses...Antipasta, 1st and 2nd course and then of course Dolce! )dessert! Have fun and try everything!! Oh gelato too!
A presto! |

I agree with Gabriela, Gnocchi is a great with any sauce, I especially like it with marinara and cheese,Gnocchi is usually made with potato, but can also be made with other ingredients, Spinach Gnocchi is also very good. My girlfriend and I went to Italy 2 times and even if we didn't have Gnocchi for dinner we would not eat at the restaurant if it was not on the menu, Gnocchi is good, Gnocchi is great, Gnocchi is all we ate!!! |

I was in florence this summer and the food is to die for! My favorite place to eat is called the OpeBar and it is right on the Arno river next to the Ponte Vechio and it is beautyful and the food is so good. i dont think that you can get a bad meal in florence. ciao. |

Don't ask our advice--ask locals or the waiter at the restaurant what he recommends. Each place usually has something they do particularly well--so ask about it, and you will not only make the owner happy, but you will enjoy some of the best foods you have ever eaten! |

All food in Italy is great! My Favorite is Gnoochi with any sauce except Gorgonzola (thats like a blue cheese) but hey if you like blue cheese then you might enjoy it too! I must admit Gnoochis with pesto or alla sorrentina is the best! In Rome.. go to Pl. Barbarini.. Ask were the there is a Church that has bones and right next to that church(I mean right next to it) there is a great restaurant and the price is reasonable! Just please dont spoil a great dinner with coke.. Have some wine and if you dont drink have water :). |

Florence is famous for their Bistecca alla Fiorentina which is a huge steak. You must have truffles, gelato and limoncello from Sorrento. No matter what, you can't really go wrong in Italy. It's a diner's destination :) |

For sure you have to try pizza and gelato, those are musts and no trip to Italy is complete without. Otherwise, each region of Italy has their own "speciality" so you are best with asking. Agriturismo's are always worth checking out. They are usually a bit out in the countryside, and grow/raise a lot of what they serve. Check out http://www.agriturismo.it/ and you will be able to search for agriturismo's in the areas you will be visiting. Have a great time on your trip! |
