For anyone who has been to Rome, Italy......? |
Okay, a group of people wishes to go to rome in the summer or anytime, really. Where would you say is the best place to stay? including best facilities, best views, preferably close to the main attractions of Rome. Also, I dont mean fancy, it would be more comfortable in a place where you can walk around in non-dressy clothes. and i just need any preferred hotels, and any major good points (and/or bad ones).
thanks to anyone who helps! |

I can't tell you where to stay - but I have a suggestion for your touring. If you can possibly afford it, spend the extra money on a private tour, just you (and your family) and the tour guide, instead of joining a group of 40 or so and being shepherded around. It'll cost about twice as much, but be ten times better.
For hotels, keep in mind that a place that, in the States, you wouldn't stay on a dare, is in Italy a one- or two-star hotel. If you want any sort of amenities at all (like a cleaning staff), you need a four-star or higher.
The first "must-see" is, of course, the Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel. The ruins are interesting, too, but involve a lot of imagination..."see this little pile of rocks? Well, it used to be a huge wall running this way and that...and over there used to be a lovely fresco, but it got moved to a museum..." and so on.
If you have a chance to go farther south and see Naples, skip Pompeii and go see the villa at Oplante instead. |

The last time I traveled there I used a company called CIE Tours. They offer a plan of bed and breakfasts and small cottages to stay in. What you do is buy certificates for each night you plan to be abroad, then they give you a book of all the places in their network, so as you travel you can decide where to stay and sometimes even book it that day. This is a really nice change if you have not been to a place because you don't get stuck choosing a place you've never seen and then having to stay there. Check it out at your local travel agent or possibly online. |

I absolutely love Rome, in fact I just got back from living there for four months. There are tons and tons of hotels in Rome, and also a few hostels if you are looking for something cheaper. I'm not exactly sure what it's called, but there is a hostel very close to the Vatican that I have heard great things about, and I'm fairly sure it is the only one in that location. Hotels are expensive in Italy, and you do not get a lot for your money in them. They are small, and tacky, but almost always clean, which is nice. Beware of any hotels near Termini (the train station), it's the only sort of dangerous neighborhood. My favorite neighborhood in Rome is called Trestevare. Tons of good restaurants, bars, lots to do. Not terrible close to the Metro, but there are some buses, and there's lots to do in the neighborhood. For some real Italian nightlife, stay away from Campo di Fiori and Piazza Navona, and head to Testaccio. It's near the Piramide metro stop on the B line...lots of clubs and no tourists...it's great. There is also another hotel option, which is my favorite. Its the Residence at 73 Vialle delle Medaglie D'Oro, and its like...50 euro a night and there's four beds, a living room, bathroom, and a kitchen. It's also right near the Cipro metro stop, and the Vatican. Okay, that was a lot...hope it helped! |
