La Zucca is one of my favorites in Venice, but it's not upscale. Try Quadri in Piazza San Marco - the restaurant is upstairs. A really special option would be one of the restaurants at the Cipriani - http://www.hotelcipriani.com/web/ocip/ocip_c5a_restaurants.jsp. I would highly recommend the Fortuny Terrace for a special occasion.

My honest suggestion is to just get lost while you are there!!! :) We went to a lot of places but found the best as we walked down back allies and had no idea where we were. The ones along the canal are nice but always crowded. Anywhere you go it will cost about $100 for 2 people. That's what we payed on average per night we were there. It is great though!! Have fun!!

Restaurants don't come more upscale than the white glove service at the Bauer Hotel, http://www.bauervenezia.com/

The food is wonderful, too.

Genius Cook
The "Ai Gondolieri" is probably the only restaurant in Venice that doesn't serve fish. I've had great Argentine and Tuscan beef there. The wine list is very good.
Soooo, if she hates fish then she won't even catch of whiff of it coming from their kitchen!

PS - the waiters speak several languages and the service is quite good.
PSS - They make great grilled veggies and also grill cheeses. If mushrooms are in season when you go there then make sure you ask for some.
PSSS - I don't know if they have a dress code but you probably should not wear short pants, flip flops or t.shirts.
