Getting change in Italy?

I've been in Italy for the last week. Why in god's name does no one give me my change in my hand? Everyone just slams my coins and bills on the counter top like I'm a jerk or something. Are they big fans of exact change??

What are you talking about? They do that here in NYC too ! Too many germs within coins and bills !

This is just the way things are done here - it's nothing personal. Look around you; there are a large number of reminders from the days of the plague in Europe - memorials, festivals like Il Redentore in Venezia, art, ... This is just a remnant of the history here and has become the custom.

No that's how they do it here. In the big supermarkets they have a plastic counter and the put it on the top, usually in smaller shop (like the one i have in the village i live in!) they usually have a little dish on the counter. After 7 years in Italy i still put out my hand, but as you say it usually just gets 'slammed' on the counter! Its very rare that someone will give it to me in my hand! Its just they way the italians do it, don't worry it's not you!

no it' s the use: historically it depend from the fear of contagion. If you look in many places there is a little plate where they put the money.
In ancient time it was a cup with winegear to disinfect the coins, then paper money went around an the winwager fade out of fashion
