You can't miss Venice, it's just one of those places everyone should get to see and experience before they die. Florence is basically the same in that regard, though the cities are vastly different. (One note: "Mr. Wizard" mentioned Michelangelo's "David" in relation to Rome...if you're looking for it, you won't find it there. It is, of course, in Florence at the Uffizi). But I agree, it's a must-see. I'm not exactly what you'd call a "patron of the arts," but even I was seriously awestruck at David. The duomo in Florence will also blow your mind.
Finally, you can't miss Rome, for about a thousand reasons. If you're still looking to burn some time, a day trip to Pompeii is WELL worth it. They let you just walk all over the town, and it's haunting but beautiful at the same time.
I've also been to Pisa (the Leaning Tower really isn't that cool and the rest of the town is lame), Naples (dirty), Milan (industrial). I don't recommend those spots.
Anyway, there's my two cents! |

The Vatican--a hot spot for Catholics, but even people of other religions are in awe of this place, where you can see the works of Michaelangelo (the statue of David is considered the most perfect sculpture).
Also check out the excavated buried areas ancient Rome that fell victim to the volcano. Spooky....but cool to visit.
And Garibaldi square...forget excatly where in Italy it's located. But you'd be impressed with the respect and reverence the people there have for General Garibaldi and his sons. And the old cities of Italian wine country, like Tuscany....historic and romantic--each view there is breath-taking!!! |

Those are must-see cities in Italy. The history, art, and culture are amazing. And the gelato in Florence is the best anywhere! |

Be sure to visit the Vatican, Rome (The Colosseum, The Spanish Steps), Florence (the Duomo and the shops of Ponte Vecchio), Venice (Basilica di San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale) and Northern Italy (the countryside, vineyards, and farmlands of Tuscany).
While we're at it, check out this link - http://www.italiantourism.com/artcities.html
It's amazing to discover that two-thirds of the world's historical artistic heritage are in Italy! |

Lake Como. I plan to SEE George Clooney. The Pope can be seen on Wednesdays in Vatican City. There is a web site for audience tickets and all. |

Torino, Florence, Rome, Positano, Alamfi, Venice and Verona. I would skip Napoli unless you want to get robbed and Milan unless u like the cold industrial feel. |
