Oh...The most beautiful squares of the world: Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navona, Piazza del Campidoglio.
The most beautiful fountains of the world: Fontana di Trevi, Fontana dell'Acqua Paola (Gianicolo), The three fountains in Piazza Navona, Fontana delle Tartarughe.

The masterpieces of Caravaggio in the church (S. Luigi dei Francesi, S. Agostino, S. Maria del Popolo).

Then: Colosseo, S. Pietro, Pantheon, Castel S. Angelo, Villa Borghese & Galleria Borghese, Trastevere, Via Veneto (La Dolce Vita), Via dei Coronari (WONDERFUL!), Campo de' Fiori, Gianicolo, Pincio.

Restaurants & pub: Trastevere and Campo de' Fiori!

go and see romolus and remus - then you will walk up the Spanish steps from the medivial times.

go and throw a coin into the trevi fountain (for luck)

see the vatikan and the swiss guards

for restaurants I would recommend you the tiny ones. they are real italian and the prices are not so tourist like there.

if there is a football match go and see one. it is a lof of fun to be part of a live match in italy - very good atmosphere

Coluseum, vatican and Piazza Navona. Don't eat in the Restarunts in the centre as i found the restarants where discosting and the ones outside town Warking distace. are traditional, value for money and bigger. Don't foget about Porta Portese as its a massive Market on Sunday Morning ask any roman and they will know where it is.
A handy tip if you need the WC when out go if you find one because they are very hard to find.

I did Rome in 1999 and was a bit disappointed but this was purely because there was scaffolding everywhere whilst preparing for year 2000. The two things I WOULD go see again is Vatican City especially the Cistine Chapel but be appropriately dressed or you'll be turned away....ie no bare legs or boobs on display! Also be prepared for huge crowds in the Cistine Chapel and to be hurried through and warned off if you try to take any pix! Set your camera to non-flash and non shutter sound! AND the Colloseum (sp?) especially if you can surreptitiously attach yourself to a guided tour who will do a great job taking you back to the days of gladiators and christians/lions with a book of pictures of then and overlaid with now! The tour I did was free if you thought it was rubbish so you only paid if you thought the (English) guide was worth it and he was! But beware the modern day gladiators outside it if you want a photo with them. They'll cost a fortune so just walk around behind them whilst your photographer takes a photo from a distance using a zoom lens. If they catch on to you taking a photo surreptitiously though, be prepared for a bit of a strop!
The other two places I'd go to are The Spanish Steps (take a picnic) and the Trevi Fountain (and be amazed how small it's setting is compared to what you've see on tv/movies etc). That is the place I got my bum pinched! But think it might have been the corner of my bag digging into me because it was so crowded!!
One place I was looking forward to and went to was the Pantheon but it was shut that day so we just parked ourselves and ate at the McDonalds right opposite - almost on top of it!
Sadly, can't recommend any restaurants as was only there for 3 days and worked up such an appetite that ANY italian food place satisfied! So really any italian food is good! Whether it's value for money or not I can't comment on....just ask locals or your hotel or b&b receptionist.
The other thing I'd prepare for is that the travel system or equivalent to the metro/underground is not as vast as it should be. When I was there my understanding was 2 lines only running from North to South and West to East so if you wanted to go anywhere in between you had to walk a lot (and is some places its fairly unsavoury)! So we had to take a bus once....just hold on for dear life!
I have to admit, I've never felt as unsafe anywhere as I did in Rome in the evening or night. Again that might have been because it didn't do itself justice with all the building works going on.
If in future, you ever get a chance, go to Florence!!!! Absolutely fantastico! Safe, welcoming, interesting, really easy to walk around, an Italian Paris!
Sorry to be so disappointed in Rome but it was my honeymoon so I had high expectations and the scaffolding and building works put me off a bit. Fortunately, after 3 days there, we went on to 5 nights in Florence and 5 nights in Sorrento......absolutely blissful!
You should go online and check out some more. I do hope you have a great time there. Expect to put on a few pounds too because the pizza and the ice cream are also brilliant!
