Buy a good guide book before you go: I used the Directions Venice guide published by Rough Guides (www.directionsguides.com) and the AA Citypack guide.
Both these are available from WHSmith's priced £6.99 each. Then, use the information contained in them to plan daily walks around Venice. Gondolas are very, very expensive but if money's no object...............! Coffee in St Mark's Square is very expensive but very romantic. There are thousands of alternatives. It's a case of "You pays your money and you takes your choice!" It is a beautiful city to visit. Don't under any circumstances forget your cameras and don't give to beggars. I really can't tell you what the "must-do's" are because its a personal choice but I'll tell you this, if you don't enjoy your visit you have no romance in your soul! |

gondolas are hideously expensive. go to st marks square - there's loads to see there. also, get some pistachio icecream - it's delicious! |

A lot of the charm of Venice lies in wandering along the canals and admiring the scenery, architecture, and art of Venice.
The tour of the Doge's Palace is worth doing.
There's a small museum upstairs in St Mark's that's interesting.
There's a new exhibition of Titian and the Sensuality of Art at the Accademia Gallery.
Take the elevator up the tower in Piazza San Marco for the views.
Visit the Guggenheim museum.
Take the vaporetto to Murano, or even better to Burano.
The gondolas are a personal experience. Whether the high prices are worth it or not depend on your sense of romance and expectations.
Unfortunately, the Biennale was last year. I usually visit that several times every other year, but there are often small art exhibitions in some of the ex churches around the city. |

Definitely St. Mark's square, Palace of Dodges, Jewish ghetto, Penny Guggenheim's museum is a little gem for art lovers. Venice is usually full of tourists so you might like to take a vaporetto (water bus) to one of the islands in the lagoon (Murano, Burano or Lido) for a bit of a breather. |

There's a good pub next to the Guggenheim called "Senso Unico" and often referred to as the Corner Pub. There is comfortable seating in the back room... the beers are cold and the atmosphere very local.
Make reservations (ask at your hotel) at the "Taverna San Trovaso" - it's a short walk from the Accademia bridge. They's got great pizza and calzoni, the sea food is always fresh and the Venetian dishes are great. |

Take a peg for your nose, cause it stinks there, don't drink at the cafes in St Marks square because you'll be ripped off. We went 20 years ago and 4 drinks cost £16. |
